Landscaping Services in Hanover, PA
Outdoor Living Built for Hanover Backyards
Hanover is a borough of about 16,400 people, roughly 19 miles southwest of York, best known as home to Utz and Snyder’s of Hanover. It was founded in 1763, saw the cavalry fight known as the Battle of Hanover just before Gettysburg, and the Hanover Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The yards we see here range from established homes in the borough, where mature landscaping needs reworking rather than replacing, to newer properties around the Hanover area with a mostly empty backyard. Those two yards shouldn’t get the same plan. What many Hanover homeowners want in either case is a real outdoor room: a patio sized for how they entertain, a place to cook, and enough cover to use it when the weather isn’t perfect.

How We Plan an Outdoor Room
Start with how people move
Square footage is the last thing we decide. First we figure out how people get from the back door to the table, where the grill sits relative to the kitchen inside, and where furniture goes so nobody is squeezing past a chair to reach the yard.
Build the kitchen like a structure
An outdoor kitchen is permanent, so it gets the same base, drainage, and attention to structure as the patio under it. If it needs power or gas, those runs get planned before the base goes in, not cut in afterward.
Add cover where it counts
A roofed area or pergola over the dining or cooking zone stretches the season. A fireplace or fire feature needs its own footing and clearances, so we lay those out with the roof and patio as one design.

Patios and entertainment spaces
Paver and natural stone patios with seating walls, fire pits, grilling areas, and lighting laid out as one connected space, using Techo-Bloc pavers and slabs.
Outdoor kitchens
Built-in grill stations, counters, and stone or masonry finishes, designed around how you cook and serve, and built to last as part of the landscape.
Covered patios and fireplaces
Timber-framed roofs, pergolas, and stone fireplaces that turn a patio into a room you can use in sun, drizzle, and cooler evenings.
Landscape renovation
For established borough homes, we decide what to keep, what to remove, and what grade or planting problems to correct before designing anything new.
Retaining walls and water features
Walls in natural stone or segmental block with drainage behind them, and pondless waterfalls scaled to the yard.
Drainage
Standing water and runoff toward the house get traced to the source first. Then we use French drains, buried downspout extensions, catch basins, or regrading. Drainage services.
Our Mission Statement
At From The Ground Up, our mission is to design and build outdoor living spaces that provide our customers with the atmosphere to create everlasting memories with their family
Design and Build Under One Roof
A multi-part project, like a patio with a wall, a kitchen, and drainage that has to go in first, works best when the people who plan it are the people who build it. That’s how we operate. Sam Chilcoat in our office handles your first call and budget range. Trey Chilcoat, our owner, visits the property and shapes the plan. Joe and Andy, our hardscape and construction foremen, lead the in-house crews that build it. We don’t sub out the work.
Trey started From the Ground Up in 2008 and was a project engineer and project manager at Kinsley Construction before running it full time. Our deck crews are trained by Trex and TimberTech/Azek, and in 2025 we received the York Builders Association’s People’s Choice Award for Best Outdoor Living, decided by public vote. Based in Glenville, we work throughout the Hanover area. Read about our full process.
What Our Customers Say About Us
“I wish I could give them 10 stars cause they are amazing! Ken is a great guy and knows alot about ag, vegetation and landscaping. The crews are quick and professional and left my driveway cleaner then the way it was. I use them for all my landscaping needs, I just wish I would have used them sooner.”
